“World Oceans Day” was established by the United Nations in 2008, at the proposal of Canada during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The aim is to raise public awareness of the essential role that oceans play in life. of the planet.
This year the theme of the 2022 Day is “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean” or “Shedding light on the communities, ideas, and solutions that are working together to protect and revitalize the ocean and all that it supports”. hosting the celebration is the United Nations Division which – in collaboration with Oceanic Global (a non-profit organization) – organizes the event. During this event, we will talk about the protection of the ocean, its ecosystems and biodiversity. also building resilience to climate change. “The ocean: life and livelihood” is the theme last year, in 2020 “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean” and again the previous year (2019) “Gender and the Ocean“. In 2018, on the other hand, “Clean our ocean” and in 2017 “Our oceans, our future”.
Some initiatives have also been undertaken in Italy. In Milan, this year, in fact, the first edition of Ocean Week promoted by One Ocean Foundation takes place with the patronage of the Municipality, the Prefecture and the Navy. Also with the collaboration of the Riccardo Catella Foundation. The event – from 8 to 12 June – includes the creation of exhibitions and workshops that intend to bring the sea to a Milanese street usually dedicated to fashion. On these days of the event, the street is transformed into “Via degli Oceani” with themed furnishings. In Rome, on the other hand, a conference was held on “WATER CLIMATE MIGRATIONS” which will address the issue of climate change which has already irreversibly transformed some of the most important marine ecosystems.
